Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat (2018; 79 min; Dir: Sara Driver)

Driver’s recent documentary of the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1970s formative years covers those heady days: pre-big art world, pre-Reagan and pre-AIDS. NYC was the scene of the burgeoning art and punk movement, and Driver lived it as well. Her film encompasses the work of a range of “downtown” figures with interviews of Jim Jarmusch, Vivienne Dick, Kenny Scharf, Fab 5 Freddy, and more!

Quill Theatre Presents: Pride and Prejudice

Quill Theatre returns with “Pride and Prejudice”. In their words, “Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five unmarried daughters, and the clock is ticking. When the wealthy bachelor Mr. Bingley arrives in town, Mrs. Bennet sees a perfect match for her beautiful daughter Jane. Mr. Bingley is not alone, however, and the combustible chemistry between the brooding stranger Mr. Darcy and the strong-willed Elizabeth Bennet will soon rock the family’s very foundations and change all of their destinies.”

Hollar 101

Discover the art and life of 17th century print maker, Wenceslaus Hollar who contributed to a culture of curiosity and showcased that interest through his art touching on themes of science, nature, historical events, and geography. This class will provide an overview of the artist and include a tour of the exhibition with the curator.

 

 

Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month with VMFA! This month the museum will be featuring a number of events to highlight the heritage, culture and art of African Americans.

This recent film is a comprehensive survey of great work by African American artists who for so long encountered barriers in the mainstream art world. In it, key artists such as Edmonia Lewis, Whitfield Lovell, Kerry James Marshall, Ellen Gallagher, and Jean-Michel Basquiat are highlighted. Art historians and gallery owners place the works in context—juxtaposing them with racist images of African Americans and setting them against the larger social contexts of Jim Crow, WWI, the civil rights movement, and ingrained racism. As well, contemporary artists discuss their influences.

Family African American Read-In

The Family African American Read Read-In celebrates children’s literature and art created by African and African American artists. Experience these works with your children through discussion, music, movement, and enrichment activities. (Intended audience: children ages 2 1/2–8 years; everyone is welcome).

Please gather in the Atrium for introductions and an opening reading with Secretary of Education Atif Qarni. Afterwards, the group will be divided and guided to the first object. The groups will then travel to their 2nd second object for the last half of the hour.

RVA Community Makers 2019 – Hamilton Glass

RVA Community MakersRichmond artist Hamilton Glass is bringing one of his signature community mural painting events to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The project offers the community a chance to come together to celebrate eight local African American leaders.

For this project, Glass will design a portable mural on eight four by four feet panels. Each panel will highlight a community leader. Glass has led these public painting events many times since 2012; his process allows volunteers to participate by filling in details of the mural under his guidance. On January 21 and February 3, individuals can come to the museum’s Art Education Center to work on the mural.

Art Education Center & Interactive Gallery Opening

Celebrate the opening of the newly renovated West Rock Art Education Center (AEC) & Memorial Foundation for Children Interactive Gallery exhibition! The day begins with a ribbon cutting at 1pm, followed by activities throughout the AEC with something for everyone to enjoy. The new Interactive Gallery exhibition, Rhythm of Art, explores the relationship of art and music. The exhibition includes a tactile print of Romare Bearden’s Three Folk Musicians, a collaborative magnetic mural, and other hands on activities that connect music and art. The Early Childhood Classroom and Studio 2 will house art projects or music and play activities, while Studio 1 will include a community mural program lead by local artist Hamilton Glass. This project will highlight African American community leaders from Richmond, Virginia.

ChinaFest: Year of the Earth Pig

Join VMFA in a celebration of the Lunar New Year and ChinaFest: Year of the Earth Pig! Explore Chinese art and culture through art-making activities, demonstrations, and performances. Decorate your own folding fan and create a miniature Earth Pig sculpture. Watch the dynamic Lion Dance, beautiful performances by Yu Dance Arts, and so much more!

The Pride: Lion Dance at UVA

The Pride: Lion Dance at UVA is UVA’s only student lion dancing troupe, bringing together students of many backgrounds and interests to share in the joy of lion dancing. Watch as dancers collaborate inside a lion costume to mimic the animal’s movements to the sounds of vigorous drumming.

Yu Dance Arts

Directed By Yu Xiao, Yu Dance Arts is a Richmond-based youth dance troupe that creates and produces intercultural dances combining Chinese traditional dances with Western modern aesthetics. The mission of Yu Dance Arts is to enrich the Richmond community by presenting Chinese-American identity, preserving and increasing awareness of Chinese heritage, sharing Chinese culture and traditions, and valuing other cultures and communities in the surrounding area.

Wushu Club at VCU

Wushu Club at VCU is a sports club that centers around Wushu, a modern Chinese performance martial arts that combine areas of gymnastics, martial arts, and choreography. A famous example of a Wushu practitioner is Jet Li. Our club aims to spread the Chinese culture of Wushu to as many people as possible.

Moy Yat Ving Tsun Kung Fu

Watch and practice graceful warrior moves with Moy Yat Ving Tsun Kung Fu. This art was made popular in the 1950s by Grand Master Yip Man, whose best-known student is movie legend Bruce Lee!

RYSE Lion Dance at VCU

This traditional troupe practices the Fut San style of lion dance, which originated in ancient southern China. The Ryse Lions have performed for various events such as weddings and festivals as well as with the Richmond Ballet.

George Mason Confucius Institute

Create a Good Luck Envelope | Ongoing

Come learn Tai Chi from visiting scholars from Beijing Language and Culture University. Tai Chi demonstrations will be showcased on the hour and participants can even try to do some of the movements themselves afterwards. Learn more about this ancient form of slow-paced Chinese martial arts that is still very widely practiced today.

Calligraphy with William & Mary Confucius Institute

Join the Confucius Institute at the College of William & Mary (WMCI), as they practice the beautiful art of writing Chinese characters. Chinese Calligraphy, the most revered fine art in China, is closely connected to Chinese culture, aesthetics, philosophy, and history. By practicing this traditional technique, you can learn how to write Chinese characters with a bamboo brush and appreciate the unique beauty of this art form.

Bugs! Fearful Symmetry in Hollar’s Insect Portraits

Interest in the insect world of moths, butterflies, grasshoppers and other fascinating creatures increased dramatically with the invention of the microscope in the early 1600’s. Join Dr. Art Evans, of “What’s Bugging You?,” to identify the insects in Hollar’s works, discuss their current existence and habitats and share insights on the modern-day connections between art and insects.
