A Nubian King in Richmond

VMFA’s statue of Senkamenisken is a masterpiece of ancient Nubian sculpture. This lecture will explore the meaning of the statue and its tumultuous history, including its exciting discovery and relocation to Virginia. This program is presented in partnership with VCUarts through the generous support of Maha and Bryan Whitfield.

College Night: Connect. Join members of the College Advisory Council for VMFA College Night. Meet artists Molly Murphy Adams and Virgil Ortiz and view their work in the special exhibition, Hear My Voice Native American Art Past and Present; learn new ways to connect with works of art through a variety of facilitated, in-gallery activities and get inspired to contribute to the College Night Mosaic Collage in the Marble Hall!

Molly Murphy Adams will discuss how her beaded works stems from a combination of traditional Native arts and modern art. Adams, a mixed blood descendent of the Oglala, Lakota tribe, learned beadwork at a very early age as well as hide tanning, sewing and traditional clothing design.


7:15 & 7:30 pm | Artist talk, Evans Court Galleries

Join Virgil Ortiz in the exhibition to discuss his contemporary take on traditional Chochiti pottery. Ortiz is a Pueblo artist, potter and fashion designer from Cochiti Pueblo, New Mexico.

3 in 30 Gallery Program: Making the Mythic Tangible

Join Dr. Johanna Minich, Assistant Curator of Native American, while they examine three objects that illustrate long-surviving stories from three different Native groups that have survived from prehistory to the present day. Free, no tickets required.

How… do you turn a sketch into a garment?

Yves Saint Laurent was the first couturier, or creator of one-of-kind garments, to revolutionize his designs and business by creating “rive-gauche” or ready-to-wear pieces. Explore how he made this possible by watching Johann Stegmeir take an idea and turn it into a wearable garment using two different construction processes: patterning and draping. This program is inspired by the special exhibition, Yves Saint Laurent: a Perfection of Style.

Join instructor Talia Moser of “Louisiana Dance Hall” in the Atrium for a night of dancing, music and fun!

Visiting Artist Workshop – Zulu Beadwork with Hlengiwe Dube

Learn about the traditions, meanings and techniques of Zulu bead work from South African artist, collector, and curator Hlengiwe Dube.  Students will be shown examples of traditional bead work and learn simple methods of designing, bead stringing and finishing techniques. Participants will make a bracelet or pair of earrings. All materials will be provided in this special workshop.

Conversation: Diversity in Fashion

Model, agent and activist Bethann Hardison will discuss diversity in the fashion industry and Yves Saint Laurent’s role in bringing awareness to the representation of people of color within the industry. This program is inspired by the special exhibition Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style.
