Sorrow Songs in an Exuberant City: How Manhattan Influenced the Guitar Imagery of Elizabeth Catlett

Examine the art and activism of Elizabeth Catlett with Dr. Dalila Scruggs, renowned for her scholarly research on the African American artist. In this featured lecture for Storied Strings: The Guitar in American Art, Dr. Scruggs addresses the ways Catlett’s formative years spent in New York City influenced the artist's important print I Have Given the World My Songs, part of the artist’s Negro Woman series. Catlett lived in Manhattan from 1942 through 1946. During these years, she sketched and painted guitars and guitar players as she wrestled with how her leftist politics and aesthetic experimentation would coexist in her work.
