Virginia Museum of Fine Arts — one of only two U.S. venues — will open the exhibition with ¡FridaFest!
Richmond, VA — The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) announced that tickets to the highly anticipated exhibition Frida: Beyond the Myth will go on sale February 1, 2025, and can be purchased online at www.VMFA.museum and at the museum.
On view at VMFA from April 5 through September 28, 2025, Frida: Beyond the Myth will feature more than 60 works of art, including captivating works by Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) along with photographs of the artist by internationally renowned photographers and members of her inner circle. The exhibition will be accompanied by English and Spanish interpretive texts, audio guides and programming. To open the exhibition, a curator’s talk will be held on April 3, and a free, fun-filled community event — ¡FridaFest! — on April 5.

VMFA is one of only two institutions in the United States — and the only East Coast venue — to present Frida: Beyond the Myth. Organized by the Dallas Museum of Art, where the exhibition premiered, Frida: Beyond the Myth is co-curated by Dr. Agustín Arteaga, the former Eugene McDermott Director, and Sue Canterbury, the Pauline Gill Sullivan Curator of American Art, at the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition is organized for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by the museum’s exhibition curator Dr. Sarah G. Powers.
Despite her position as one of the most documented artists of the 20th century, Kahlo remains an elusive figure, clouded by a mythology that was partly of her own making –– a persona of opposing characteristics: seductive and innocent, strong and vulnerable. Frida: Beyond the Myth explores the defining moments of Kahlo’s life as depicted through her self-portraits, still lifes and works on paper from the beginning of her career in 1926 until her death in 1954.
Visitors can admire Kahlo’s powerful paintings, embedded with vivid symbolism, while learning about the deeply personal contexts and traumatic events that inspired her work, thus gaining insight into this remarkable artist who used her creativity to overcome emotional and physical pain. The exhibition also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Mexico that influenced the artist throughout her life.
“Frida Kahlo looks out from her paintings with a gaze, now so familiar to us, that projects both strength and vulnerability. This striking gaze is the reason why her paintings have such enduring impact and wide appeal. Who cannot relate to the need to project outward power in moments of inner weakness?” Powers said. “But this effect was carefully orchestrated by Kahlo herself in part as a way to work through difficult events in her life.”
Through this exceptional presentation of Frida Kahlo’s paintings and drawings — shown alongside photographs and prints by those closest to her, including Diego Rivera, Nickolas Muray, Rosa Covarrubias, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Julien Levy and her father, Guillermo Kahlo — visitors are compelled to discover the woman behind the myth.

Ticket Information
Beginning February 1, tickets to the exhibition Frida: Beyond the Myth can be purchased online at www.VMFA.museum and will be $20 for adults, $16 for seniors 65+, and $10 for youth ages 7 to 17 and college students with ID. Tickets will be free for museum members and children ages 6 and under. Museums for All participants will be able to purchase tickets at the reduced price of $2 each with a limit of four tickets per Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. As a participant of Blue Star Museums, VMFA also provides free tickets for all active duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel and their immediate families.
Curator’s Opening Talk
On April 3, Dr. Sarah Powers will speak about how Frida: Beyond the Myth moves past the mythology surrounding Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and how the exhibition elucidates the inspiring life and work of this extraordinary woman whose jewel-like paintings are among the most memorable and haunting images of the 20th century. Dr. Powers will explore works on view in the exhibition, which showcases a selection of rarely seen paintings, drawings, prints and photographs. ¡FridaFest!
VMFA will celebrate Frida Kahlo and her heritage with an exciting free community event, ¡FridaFest!, on the opening day of the exhibition, April 5. Del 5 de abril al 28 de septiembre de 2025, el VMFA presentará Frida: más allá del mito, una exposición que incluirá más de 60 obras de arte, entre las que se encuentran algunas fascinantes obras de Frida Kahlo (1907–1954), junto con fotografías de la artista tomadas por fotógrafos de renombre internacional y personas de su círculo íntimo. “Frida Kahlo nos mira desde sus cuadros con una expresión, hoy en día tan familiar para nosotros, que proyecta tanto fortaleza como vulnerabilidad. Esa mirada intensa es la razón por la que sus pinturas tienen un impacto tan perdurable y despiertan tanto interés. ¿Quién no se identifica con la necesidad de proyectar fortaleza en momentos de debilidad interna?”, dijo Powers. “Pero este efecto fue orquestado con sumo cuidado por la propia Kahlo, en parte como una forma de procesar los eventos difíciles de su vida”.
