Curatorial Assistant Madeleine E. Dugan joined the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2020. She received her BFA in Craft and Material Studies as well as dual minors in Art History and Criminal Justice from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2021. Dugan began her role at VMFA as a research assistant for the Man Ray: The Paris Years exhibition and co-authored the “Chronology” for the exhibition catalog. Now as VMFA’s Curatorial Assistant, she has co-curated The Art of Advertisement: Art Nouveau Posters of the Late 19th Century which will be open until January 2024, which will be succeeded by another exhibition she has co-curated, Producing the Picturesque: Watercolors and Collaborative Prints by Kawase Hasui. Dugan holds a particular interest in 19th century decorative arts and works on paper, as well as contemporary craft and design.
This talk will focus on women and their role in the Decorative arts between 1890 to 1930, with a specific focus on French Art Nouveau and French Art Deco styles.
