VMFA Photography Challenge:
"Destinations"

October through December 2024

Celebrate photography with us. At the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, explore the two exhibitions A Long Arc: Photography and the American South since 1845 and American, born Hungary: Kertész, Capa, and the Hungarian American Photographic Legacy. And don’t stop there. Join our latest photography challenge and share your own pics with us! The challenge is simple. Its theme is “Destinations,” which relates to the two exhibitions and their photographic journeys through time and geography. Simply snap pics that capture your idea of a great destination and post your photos using #VMFAPhotoChallenge on Instagram or Facebook, and we’ll repost them for our community to enjoy.

The Challenge: Destinations

A destination can be a faraway place, and it can be home. Whether your photo is of a magnificent vista or a fleeting moment captured at your doorstep, it’s the destination that inspires you. You can share travel photos of literal destinations captured in landscapes, cityscapes, or even portraits. You can also share photos that represent figurative destinations such as justice, freedom, and peace.  Whatever your destination—literal or figurative—share them with us.

How to Participate

No matter what your technique, equipment, experience, or style—from avant-garde to the everyday—we look forward to seeing the world through your eyes.

  • Share your photos using #VMFAPhotoChallenge on Instagram or Facebook.
  • There is no limit to the number of photographs you share.
  • All experience levels are welcome to participate.
  • You need only a camera—of any type—and a Facebook or Instagram account.
  • Exhibition attendance is encouraged but not required.

About the Exhibitions

A Long Arc: Photography and the American South since 1845 is an epic journey that examines photography in and about the South and explores that region’s central role in shaping American identity and its critical impact on the development of photography. Get Tickets.

American, born Hungary: Kertész, Capa, and the Hungarian American Photographic Legacy follows 20th-century Hungarian-born photographers to Paris and Berlin and then on to New York, Chicago, and L.A., where they reinvented themselves and American photography. Get Tickets.
