The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks one Art Handler to ensure the safety of works of art in the care of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts during movement and installation.  This position will move and install valuable art objects in various locations; pack and unpack objects, maintain collections storage areas to ensure the safety of the art; create custom crate interiors for outgoing loans, frame/unframe two-dimensional works, and perform other miscellaneous art handling duties as required.

Qualifications:  The selected candidate will have knowledge of custom construction, fabrication, and installation methods, design and engineering techniques, and of handling, packing and storage practices related to the preservation of fine art objects.  Some knowledge of art history and principles of conservation a plus.  Additionally, he/she will have considerable skill in the operation of hand and power fabrication tools for wood, plastics and some metals and experience with hoists, lifts and other material handling equipment.  The selected candidate will demonstrate his/her ability to effectively interact with the public and collaborate with colleagues in potentially stressful situations with multiple priorities and overlapping deadlines.  Moderate computer skills desirable.  Graduation from high school or equivalent training and experience in carpentry required. Candidates must also be in good health and able to lift and move heavy objects.   A security background check will be required.

Starting Salary:  $28,000 with full benefits.
