Did you know that the VMFA has been offering art history classes for adults for more than 40 years? Though we still have traditional lecture-style art history classes, we have evolved over the years to also offer one- and two-part introductory “101” courses that combine lectures and gallery exploration. This allows students to take advantage of one of the best classrooms available: the VMFA galleries!
Art history class topics are diverse—from ancient Egyptian tomb sculpture to works of art created in the 21st century—and inspired by works in the museum’s collections, suggestions from students, and special exhibitions, which connect our permanent collection works with works outside of our collection.
One example is a two-part evening class, The Arts of South Africa, which begins next week. Taught by museum curator Richard Woodward, this class offers a unique opportunity for students learn about the historic arts of southern Africa while renowned South African artist Esther Mahlangu is on-site, creating mural-scale paintings for VMFA’s permanent collection. (There’s still space available; register today!)
Many of our students have taken a VMFA art history class every single semester, but anyone 16 and above, who is interested in extending their study of art, is welcome. After deciding whether you prefer a traditional art history lecture course or a more interactive gallery exploration format, start with a small commitment (one of our two-session classes). And remember: no tests or grades, just the pleasure of learning!
*Art history classes, offered in the fall, spring, and summer, are often limited to 25 students. Early registration is suggested. For more information on our art history classes for adults, please visit vmfa.museum/programs/adults/art-history-classes/.
