Hanshan, a Chan Buddhist monk-poet of the Tang dynasty, is shown here walking across water. As a form of Daoist tribute, a gourd hangs from his waist, and he holds a scroll depicting the full moon, an image typically associated with enlightenment. The artist, Zhu Changlai, was a regional prince who pursued poetry and calligraphy. Like other well-educated aristocrats, Zhu was interested in Buddhist and Daoist subjects, and he specialized in figure painting.
