This figure of St. John, with its half-sad, half-smiling expression, is an outstanding example of the highly sophisticated sculpture that was created in Swabia (near Lake Constance). The young saint’s elegant pose and aristocratic aloofness are characteristic of this school. The sculpture originally belonged to a carved wooden altarpiece that included several other saints flanking the central figures of the Virgin and Child.
