Samuel John Egbert Jones, English, active 1820 - 1855 (Artist)
Little is known of Jones’s life; his work was chiefly recognized through engravings that were popular with sporting enthusiasts. These four scenes present a more casual approach to hunting that flourished after Parliament relaxed the Game Acts, allowing more people greater access to hunting grounds. Later, in the Victorian period, hunts became much more elaborate events with large hunting groups, beaters (aides who helped drive game toward the hunters by making noise and disturbing shrubbery), carriage parties, and extravagant meals.
