Lacquerware pillows such as this example feature an extendable drawer in which incense, flowers, and other natural materials with calming aromas were placed. While resting one’s head on the pillow, the fragrances would seep through the perforations on the sides, releasing scents and ensuring a pleasant night’s sleep.
