The production of Korean roof-end tiles began in the 1st century after the architectural form was introduced from China. 2016.72 and 2016.80 would have adorned the ends of multiple columns of tiles covering the eaved roofs of temples and palaces during the Unified Silla kingdom. Both examples feature lotus-petal motifs, symbols of Buddhist purity, arranged in concentric tiers.
