This plein air portrait is one of Sargent’s most impressionistic paintings. Rendered from a low perspective with unconcealed brushstrokes, its composition and technique are reminiscent of Claude Monet’s Woman with a Parasol—Madame Monet and her Son (below). The French painting appeared at the 1876 Second Impressionist Exhibition where the two artists likely first met. However, it was not until later in his career that Sargent fully embraced the spontaneous style of out-of-doors painting. Likely painted in the summer of 1883, this portrait captures the famed French author, art critic, and musicologist atop a sandy dune, probably near her home in Saint-Enogat.
