Lépine depicts a dock along the Bassin de la Villette, part of the canal system in northeastern Paris that historically served as a hub for the district’s many abbatoirs (slaughterhouses) and related agricultural industry. The artist, little known today, exhibited in four of the eight Impressionist exhibitions.
