Antoine-Charles-Horace Vernet, called Carle, was the son of Joseph-Carle Vernet, a seascape painter to Louis XV. Carle, who classically trained at the French Academy under history painter Nicolas-Bernard Lepicié, is mostly remembered today for his huge paintings of battles during the First Empire, for which he received the 1808 French Legion of Honor. However, throughout his career he also produced sporting art after the British model, as in this gentle example showing a race with spectators following on horseback.
