"[My photographs] deal with my insecurities about my body image and the direct correlation between self-perception and the way one is perceived by others."—Jen Davis

Davis began producing photographic self-portraits while she was an MFA student at Yale University. Her work follows several trends of the last few decades, including a focus on the physical body, an exploration of cultural notions of beauty, and social commentary based on personal experience. These photographs developed out of Davis’s own experience and, though carefully posed, have the casual look of snapshots. In the images here, she appears merely standing, glimpsed in a pause between actions. The handling of form and color suffuses the scenes with a mix of sensuality and melancholy.
