During its recent Shining Example Awards ceremony, the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) named the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) the 2011 Travel Attraction of the Year. This marks the first time this prestigious award has been given to a museum and the third consecutive year the Richmond Region has received a Shining Example Award.

After the board of trustees accepts the acquisitions, the art becomes the property of the Commonwealth of Virginia to protect, preserve and interpret.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) jointly announced today the largest-ever cash gifts to both organizations totaling $115 million. The record gifts will help acquire additional works of art and support medical research. Thirteen additional charitable organizations will receive the remaining $10 million.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ landmark exhibition Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée Picasso, Paris brought more than just visitors to the Commonwealth. The exhibition brought $26.6 million to the Richmond region and a further $2.3 million across Virginia, totaling nearly $30 million.
