Explore the central role of the horse in nineteenth-century French Art in a dual art history and museum studies course held at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Together, qualified students from central Virginia universities will examine paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings by artists such as Théodore Géricault, Eugène Delacroix, Edgar Degas, Raoul Dufy, and Pablo Picasso while studying relevant issues in museum practice in preparation for the resulting, collaboratively organized VMFA Statewide exhibition. University of Richmond Museums will present The French Horse from Géricault to Picasso in early 2016.
Art historical topics include: the horse in human history, Romanticism, Second Empire and Impressionism, Modernism, and in-depth study of French artists Théodore Géricault and Edgar Degas

Museum studies topics include: developing and implementing exhibitions, the University Museum and its mission, exhibition didactics and design, the role of museum educators
Students must be nominated by a faculty advisor and selected by VMFA staff through competitive application. Complete applications must be received by February 15, 2015.
Qualified students will be notified by March 1, 2015.
