The Youth and Family Studio Programs focus on art-making and hands-on learning for young audiences (grades K-12). During the school year, we offer after school and weekend programs; while in the summer, we run nearly a hundred camps and classes in six different studios. These are, in part, managed by our intern and volunteer staff. The studio instructors for these programs are seasonal and rely heavily on our staff for guidance and assistance.
Therefore, interns help lead program logistics and assist in providing our students with an exceptional and fun educational experience. Duties may include, but are not limited to: assisting art teachers; facilitating class check-ins and check-outs; organizing art supplies; supervising volunteers; leading student tours through the galleries; writing a lesson plan; interacting closely with museum visitors and the public; tending to needs of children, parents, teens, and teachers; assisting with a student exhibition; researching for educational resources; and participating in administrative duties. Interns are also expected to attend regular training sessions and maintain a daily log.
We are looking for enthusiastic applicants who are interested in gaining experience or advancing their skill set in studio arts, museum education, and/or classroom management and teaching. Applicants should have some experience and/or interest in working with children. Applicants are encouraged (but not required) to submit their Philosophy of Teaching statement. Interns are required to commit 10-20 hours a week during the school year, or 28-40 hours per week in the summer. We usually place one to two interns for the fall semester, one to two for spring, and five to seven for the summer semester. No stipends are provided.
