Job Overview
The Early Childhood Education Program at VMFA is a Reggio-inspired, interest-led and student-centered program for children ages 3 months to 5 years old and their caregivers. The Early Childhood Education Interns will provide assistance to the Early Childhood Education Programs through a paid summer internship running from May 10-Aug. 16, 2025. Along with working weekdays, the Interns must be available to work one weekend a month to help with weekend classes. These Internships are funded in part by the generous support of the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Foundation.
The Early Childhood Education Interns will support the Early Childhood Education program operations and logistics through assisting the Early Childhood Coordinator and Educators with the administrative and clerical tasks, preparation for the Annual Early Childhood Student Exhibition, and the execution of summer camps and classes. These positions will provide hands-on experience for emerging art, early childhood, and education professionals as they prepare to enter the work force.
Duties
The Interns will collaborate in the research, preparation, and implementation of a variety of Early Childhood Education programs including Curiosity Camps in June and caregiver accompanied programs in July and August. Duties include, but are not limited to:
-Maintaining clerical projects including compiling a binder for rosters, updating and preparing student forms, quotes, and name stickers.
-Ensuring that safety provisions, including first aid kits and handheld radios, are in place.
-Assisting with camps through overseeing setup, wayfinding, check in, assisting teachers and working with children while camp is in session, and cleanup.
-Maintaining documentation of camps including photography and recording of in-class conversations among students.
-Assisting Early Childhood Assistant with camp program statistics and tracking the stats. via a provided tracking document.
The Interns will assist with the acquisition of objects and planning of the Annual Student Exhibition. This entails:
-Performing clerical tasks for the Annual Student Exhibition, such as securing artist release forms, creating and updating planning documents, etc.
-Assisting in the design of the Exhibition, including writing labels, layout, text content and image choices for didactic panels, and preparing frames to be sent to framer.
The Interns will also support year-round classes, which encompasses:
-Supporting teachers with the development of curriculum and lesson plans.
-Assisting with the preparation of materials to be used for classes.
-Studio maintenance and maintenance of supply inventory.
-Designing and teaching the components of a lesson that will include an art project, a story time, and gallery tour. The interns will gain lesson planning and classroom management skills as they are guided by Educators to create and teach a lesson of their own.
-Researching and presenting works of art from VMFA’s collection to children and their caregivers.
Interns will also assist with marketing projects, as needed, including social media posts, events, and research projects.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidates should be currently enrolled in a degree seeking program for an associate’s, bachelor’s, or higher degree, in early childhood education, art education, general education, museum education, art history, or related field.
The successful candidates should also have:
-Previous experience working with young children.
-Knowledge of basic child development.
-Coursework in early childhood education, art education, art history, or a related field.
-Excellent organizational and customer service skills.
-Comfort performing physical tasks, including lifting items up to 30 lbs., moving objects, standing for extended periods, and supervising children outdoors.
Additional Considerations
Preferred Qualifications include:
-First Aid and CPR training.
-Knowledge of studio art disciplines and art history.
-Demonstrated knowledge of Reggio-inspired and inquiry-based teaching pedagogy.
The selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
