Job Duties
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a motivated and energetic individual to join the VMFA on the Road program as our VMFA On the Road Program Specialist. This position supports the museum’s outreach efforts by providing transportation services for the artmobile and assisting with exhibition setup and takedown at various sites across Virginia and neighboring states. You’ll be part of an exciting team bringing art to communities and ensuring smooth logistics for each residency.

This is a salaried, non-exempt position offering $55,000 annually and Commonwealth of Virginia employee benefits, such as 12 paid holidays, health care and more. Responsibilities:
Transportation & Program Coordination
Safely drive the VMFA on the Road artmobile (an 18 wheeler) to various residency sites across Virginia and neighboring states. Planning travel routes, monitor GPS for real-time updates, and ensure the security of both the vehicle and exhibitions. Perform site visits before each residency to assess parking and setup requirements.
Site Logistics
Assist with the set-up and breakdown of exterior components for the artmobile and exhibitions. Help load and unload materials, ensuring all exhibits are safely transported and displayed. Ensure the area is clean and ready for visitors before the exhibit opens.
Administrative Duties
Maintain vehicle logs, coordinate repairs, and purchase necessary materials for the artmobile. Arrange travel accommodations and submit timely reports on travel and maintenance.
Brand Ambassador
Represent VMFA by providing excellent customer service to visitors, sponsors, and VIPs. Assist in creating a welcoming atmosphere and share information about VMFA’s exhibits and programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with Class A Endorsement is required.
Proven experience operating an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer with air brakes.
Ability to lift at least 100 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
Clean driving record with no major violations (e.g., reckless driving, DUI).
Knowledge of Virginia DMV, DOT, and federal regulations.
Excellent time and stress management skills
Effective reading, writing, verbal, and listening communication skills, essential for recording and maintaining daily records (e.g., driver logs)
Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff and the public
Additional Considerations
Experience with the State purchasing eVA system.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities typically gained and demonstrated through completion of a bachelor’s degree.
Position Notes:
Frequent overnight travel is required.
Must pass background checks, including fingerprinting and drug screenings
The selected candidate must undergo a Pre-Employment Background Check screening, including a fingerprint check (conducted by the Virginia State Police)
Mandatory drug screening is required
Recurring random mandatory drug screenings, including blood, alcohol, and toxicology tests
Regular Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) checks are required to maintain employment
