Coffin of Tjeby: Hieroglyphic Discovery

Hieroglyphs were the basis of the written language of ancient Egyptians. The hieroglyphic system contained around 700 to 800 basic symbols. These symbols were connected to form words and sentences, which could be read from top to bottom, and right to left.

The outside of Tjeby’s coffin is decorated with symbols. Each hieroglyph translates into various names and titles (Count and Sealbearer of the King of Lower Egypt) along with prayers to protect him in the afterlife. Discover their meaning by hovering over the hieroglyphs on the coffin below!
