Utrillo was raised in the Parisian neighborhood of Montmartre, an area made famous by artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec who depicted the colorful cabarets and cafés and the characters who inhabited them. Utrillo established a reputation as one of the foremost painters of cityscapes and Montmartre in particular. By the time he painted this scene, however, the intellectual and artistic heart of the city had moved to the neighborhood of Montparnasse, located on the left bank of the Seine.
