The resort town of Villerville, located on the Normandy coast next to Trouville and Deauville, sits across the Seine estuary from Le Havre, where Dufy was born. Impressed by the bright colors of Matisse and the Fauves at the Salon des Indépendants of 1905, Dufy expanded his palette in kind. The calligraphic brushstrokes show a flair for the decorative- appropriate since Dufy also designed textiles, ceramics, and architectural elements.
