Working primarily in the South, the Swiss-born Troye catered to planters and owners who found their values and aspirations reflected in his rendition of the increasingly complex, organized, and sophisticated racing industry. Troye, well versed in the aristocratic genre of animal portraiture brought to perfection by British sporting artists such as George Stubbs, clearly sought to establish a tradition of American sporting art that not only equaled the achievement of those British masters but also established his American patrons as the true descendants of the British aristocracy.
