VMFA Plans Regional Visitor Center in Historic Robinson House

Since the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts opened in May 2010, its annual attendance has been the largest of any attraction in the region. Because of its proximity to I-95/I-64 and its leadership position, VMFA will rehabilitate the historic Robinson House and repurpose it to include a regional visitor center.

VMFA Architect Rick Mather Dies

Rick Mather, architect of the James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Wing and the E. Claiborne and Lora Robins Sculpture Garden of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, has died at age 75 after a short illness.

William A. Royall, Jr. Elected VMFA President

William A. Royall, Jr. has been elected president of the VMFA Board of Trustees. He will assume office at the beginning of the new fiscal year on July 1, 2013. Thurston Moore of Hunton & Williams has served as President for the past three years.

Art Museum Day on May 18

On May 18th, VMFA will offer free admission to the special exhibition Pop Art and Beyond: Tom Wesselmann as part of the American Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) Art Museum Day. The celebration complements International Museum Day, an annual worldwide event coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

2013 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Nation’s Talented Teens

Twenty-five students from the Richmond region received National Awards for their artwork submitted to The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program, recognizing outstanding creative teenagers and offering scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors. Of these National Awards, 15 received Gold Medals and 12 received Silver Medals.

New Director of Audience Development at VMFA

VMFA is pleased to announce the appointment of Darrian P. Mack in the new position of Director of Audience Development. Mack joins the Art and Education Division, reporting to the Deputy Director for Art and Education, and will support mission-critical efforts across the museum with an emphasis on programming.

Glassblowing Comes to the iPhone

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and The Martin Agency announced today a joint effort that brings to life works of art by artist Dale Chihuly. To complement Chihuly’s exhibition at VMFA, The Martin Agency worked with Unit9 in London to create the first ever glassblowing iPhone app, inspired by Chihuly’s unique art process.
