Job Duties

The Collections Management department of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts invites applications from individuals skilled in the handling of art and in project management for the position of Art Handler for the Permanent Collection. This position plays a leading role in the rotation of art in the permanent galleries and offers critical support to the acquisition, preservation, and presentation of all art in the care, custody, and control of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The role requires strong project management skills and experience handling many types of art.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of and demonstrated skill in the handling, installation, packing, transportation, and storage of art according to museum standards

Significant project management skills and experience

Strong organizational skills

Good judgment and a willingness to adapt to shifting priorities and deadlines

Additional Considerations

Documented success as a professional Art Handler in a museum or gallery environment with a minimum of three years’ experience preferred.

Experience with lifts and significant skill in the operation of hand and power fabrication tools as well as other material handling equipment.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

Proficiency in the use of Collections Management Systems (preferably TMS), Microsoft Office, Outlook, and project management software such as Asana.

Comfort reading exhibition designer’s layouts.
