Lion Devouring a Doe (Primary Title)
Antoine-Louis Barye, French, 1796 - 1875 (Artist)
Barye’s bronzes were cast by a number of large and small foundries, and the most popular models were cast in numerous editions throughout the 19th century and beyond. This finished cast is based on the master model shown nearby. It bears the mark of the Barbédienne foundry, one of the two largest bronze foundries in Paris. The Barbédienne foundry acquired many of Barye’s models after his death. This cast, made around 1882, was executed with great care, as evidenced by the fine patina and careful surface finishing. A close comparison with the master model, however, shows that a significant amount of detail has been lost through the casting process.
