Barye, like other artists of his time, made sketches for his sculptures in plaster, wax, or a combination of the two. This rough sketch, similar in pose to the rearing horse in Horse Attacked by a Lion, was preparatory for an elaborately sculptured mantel clock made for the Parisian merchant Isaac Péreire. Such sketches by Barye are surprisingly modern in taste and should be compared with similar wax sketches of horses by Edgar Degas in the Mellon Collection. It should not be forgotten that Barye was Rodin’s teacher.
The wax is supported on a metal rod that extends from the interior armature (through the horse's belly). The metal rod is attached to a small wooden base, which is in turn attached to a larger wooden base inset in a black lacquered base.
