Wanyugo Mask (Primary Title)
Janus Fire Spitter Mask (Alternate Title)
Unknown (Artist)
With fangs bared in its gaping jaws and dagger-like tusks pointing both forward and back, this fearsome, two-headed mask looks ready for its mission to seek out and destroy evil spirits and witches. During its most dramatic demonstrations of supernatural powers, wanyugo masks were said to emit sparks and fire, earning the popular name “fire-spitter mask.” This venerable mask shows evidence of repair to one jaw and is missing several small parts from its top. Rather than making it seem flawed, however, these subtle clues to its history indicate that the mask was considered effective, so it continued to be used even after showing signs of wear.
