Page from a Ragamala Series: Ramakali Ragini (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
Artists working in the small princely state of Sirohi in southwest Rajasthan produced paintings in a rather folkish idiom that mixed Mewari, Marwari, and Gujarati features with a passion for patterning and color. This image of the Ramakali Ragini displays the Sirohi school’s love of abstract pictorial structure and juxtaposed decorative patterns in fiery hues. It depicts a kneeling hero who, declaring his love, humbly touches the heroine’s feet. She, however, turns away in disdain.
