Songyun 松雲 (Artist)
Often considered the patriarch of Chan or Zen Buddhism, the legendary monk Damo (382-536), known as Bodhidharma in Sanskrit, is depicted here sitting on a prayer mat, engaged in “wall contemplation.” The white robe, bulbous bald head, large earlobes, and thick beard characterize him as Damo, who brought Zen from South India to China in 500 AD. After landing at the port of Guangzhou, Damo traveled to the capital of Nanjing, and the Shaolin Temple, spreading the Zen teachings throughout China.
