Ox-Herding (Translation)
騎牛觀花圖 清光緒 倪墨耕 紙本設色 (Primary Title)
Ni Tian 倪田, Chinese, 1855 - 1919 (Artist)
Born in Yangzhou, Ni Tian traveled to
Shanghai to explore possible business opportunities in the port city. While
there, he was attracted to Ren Bonian’s popular works and began to pursue painting
instead. In this view, Ni created a spring scene of a young ox herder looking
at a blossoming peach tree as he sits on the animal’s broad back. The narrative
subject and the visual color effect represent the Shanghai-school style that
developed in the late 19th century.
