Shanghai-based Ge Xianglan was a celebrated master known for his horse paintings in southern China, often compared to Xu Beihong from the north. Here, Ge depicted a dark brown horse standing in a large stream. The color shading on the horse and the glow on the horizon reveal his early training at the Shanghai Art College, where he studied Western paintings.
