The ranks of prostrate figures on this relief show the worship of Aten, the sun god who became the sole focus of worship during the Amarna period. The relief is carved in sandstone, an easily worked material that dates this relief to his Karnak Temple, built early in the reign of Amenhotep IV (previously known as Akhenaten), prior to the construction of the new capital at Tell el-Amarna, where the temples were constructed of locally available limestone.
