A “gig” refers to any two-wheeled carriage driven by a single horse. Here a fashionable gentleman sits atop a Tilbury gig, which was well suited to riding on rough roads. Hancock successfully portrays the elegance of the wealthy owner’s horse and conveyance, ennobling the scene with the classical archway at left.
