Liu Yin, Chinese, active 18th - 19th centuries (Artist)
This album leaf, the first in a series of eight, illustrates Beijing’s sprawling Beihai Park and Taiye Pond, today known as the Middle and Southern Seas. Located west of the Forbidden City, this area underwent significant reconstruction under Emperor Qianlong. Sites depicted in Liu’s rendering include Jade Islet (Qiongdao), stone bridges, and the Circular City (Tuancheng), which is a walled complex of temple halls, surrounded by trees.
