In a tranquil view outside the inner city, Liu depicts the “golden terrace,” a platform that Emperor Qianlong visited to observe the setting sun. Today, this part of east-central Beijing is host to massive skyscrapers, and during building construction in 2002, an original stone tablet inscribed with the text “Sunset at the Golden Terrace,” by Qianlong was excavated on the site.
