Barren trees and rooftops are enveloped in mist in this atmospheric scene north of Beijing’s city walls. This area is thought to have once been the location of Jizhou, an ancient city dating to the Tang dynasty (618-907). By the 12th century, it became known as one of Beijing’s “Eight Views,” a title it carried into the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Beijing’s centuries of history were of great interest to Qianlong, who was known for his scholarly pursuits.
