The Luxembourg Family (Primary Title)
Nicholas Lancret, French, 1690 - 1743 (Artist)
Lancret was an early painter of “conversation pieces,” which depict groups of people engaged in informal activities. In this imaginative painting, an aristocratic family is visiting the countryside. Pretending to be a simple shepherd, the father plays a bagpipe before a frothy landscape as his wife carelessly dangles a fishing line and their daughter carries a basket. Fishing was considered a virtuous leisure activity in antique poetry and philosophy.
