Here George Morland, praised for the “piggishness of his pigs,” seems to exult in the animals’ happy existence in a state of nature. A frequent subject for the artist, the pig was reportedly his favorite animal. His loose painterly style was wellsuited to capturing the porcine subjects up close, emphasizing their wiry hide—a characteristic of the animals before the practice of selective breeding—from the vantage point within the filthy sty.
