White Still Life (Primary Title)
Natura morta bianca (Alternate Title)
Giorgio Morandi, Italian, 1890 - 1964 (Artist)
Morandi was born in Bologna, where he later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. Though influenced early in his career by Futurism and the “Metaphysical School,” Morandi never fully belonged to any particular artistic movement and approached the craft of painting in a very classical manner, insisting on stretching his own canvases and creating his own paint. Morandi painted still lifes throughout his career, but after 1940 he began producing series in which he depicted the same subject repeatedly, exploring the subtle differences achieved by varying viewpoints, light, or groupings of objects.
