Inscriptions on other versions of this scene identify the warriors playing dice as the Greek heroes of the Trojan War Ajax and Achilles. In this version, the goddess Athena (or a statue of her) stands behind the players. This popular scene was probably created by Exekias, one of the most creative Greek vase painters, apparently without any literary model (unlike most depictions of the Trojan War).
