This coin, with its dramatic depiction of a turning chariot, was designed by Euainetos, a skilled and innovative artist who introduced foreshortening into coin design. Nike, goddess of Victory, hovers over the quadriga (four-horse chariot), crowning the charioteer. The kings of Syracuse, where this decadrachm (ten drachma coin) was produced, were famous for their passion for chariot racing.
