In 1922 Hasui traveled from Tokyo to western Japan, making sketches in preparation for the series Japanese Sceneries. He visited Beppu on Kyushu Island, a port known for its hot springs. In Morning in Beppu, he depicted a seascape of fishing boats just returning to the shore, where a fisherman is selling products to the locals. The artist used a yellow hue to define the morning glow above the distant mountains. In 1923 when the Great Earthquake struck Tokyo, like many of Hasui’s prints and original woodblocks, the woodblock of this print was destroyed.
