Deep Dish (Primary Title)
Oval Deep Dish, "Cadmus-Eagle" (Alternate Title)
Boston and Sandwich Glass Co., American (Sandwich, MA, active 1826 - 1888) (Artist)
Glass production using free-blown and mold-blown methods is an ancient art practiced worldwide. However, mechanically pressed glass is a fully American product. In the 1820s, Boston-area glass manufacturers devised a system in which molten glass was dropped into the desired shape and pattern. Glassware soon featured geometric or pictorial designs - this intricate dish depicts American eagles and jaunty clipper ships - and a new decorative treatment in which the background is filled with hundreds of raised dots. This overall stippled effect, which enhances the reflection of light, is commonly known as "lacy."
