A Setter with Thistles ("Médor") (Primary Title)
Pierre-Jules Mêne, French, 1810 - 1879 (Artist)
Mêne excelled in capturing different textures and adding decorative detail without detracting from the subject of his sculptures. Here, the setter stands over a group of prickly thistles that contast with the dog’s masses of curly fur. Like Barye, Mêne established his own foundry, which allowed him to control the quality of the works produced from his models.
Signed on proper right front of base: "P J MENE"
