Napoleon, with his glorious ascent to the imperial throne and his subsequent fall from power and demise in exile, was quintessential Romantic hero. Barye shows him here as a “citizen-king’ rather than in his military glory as did Jacques-Louis David in his famous painting Napoleon Crossing the Alps.
Signed at proper right, top of base behind hoof: "BARYE".
