This striking painting shows a ceremony at the main temple of Shri Nathji at Nathadwara in Rajasthan. The tallest figure on the left is Govardhanlalji, the temple’s chief priest from 1877 to 1934. He leads a ritual in which two groups of white-robed men venerate the images of five deities installed in an elaborate altar. Some of the men raise lighted lamps; others stand with their hands joined in attitudes of respect. A cluster of richly garbed women stands to the left; a group of musicians plays at the bottom; and ritual implements and offerings are placed on the floor. Dramatically patterned fabrics decorate the sanctuary and are wrapped around the trunks of the plantain trees flanking the altar.
